I am a huge fan when it comes to films… Not just any film though. The film has to have substance, good acting, a great screenplay and off course, some action and romance never hurts! That is why I have always been a fan of all Marvel® films all my life! Get me some buttered popcorn, an ice cold Coke and a Superhero who is going to save the day and I’m all set!
That was before… Before I became part of the real world and saw the terrible reality that society has picked out for us. You are probably wondering what I mean by this statement? I will tell you. And when I am finished giving you the facts, when you are finished reading this article, I hope that all of you might grasp what I am trying to get through to the whole world!
“It’s a man’s world…” Isn’t that the saying said by so many people? Almost like the saying; “That’s so gay.” Which, by most people is not meant to be malicious, but it’s still giving a the world a message. And yet, those phrases are used every day by thousands of people around the world.
We live in a world today where racism, sexism and homophobia are a thing of the past… Right? Isn’t that what the “New age” is all about?
NO!! All a bunch of lies, told by people who fear that the truth might hurt more than all the untruths… There are racists all around us, people who can’t tolerate anyone who looks different than they do. Homophobia is one of the biggest problems we struggle with all over the world! But the one thing I REALLY want to talk about is sexism… And No, I won’t go into details about women and men and how in every aspect there is inequality. That would take forever! No, I want to talk about the film industry and sexism. Now I am sure most of us are aware of a certain leaked email from a certain CEO where it was mentioned that Female superheroes as leads in any movie is a waste of people’s time and money? Do you agree? I am sure there will be certain individuals who agree with this. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion, off course. And that is why I want to say; It is absolute bullsh*#t! Women are just as empowering, strong willed, intelligent and driven as men. So why can’t we have a Superhero that is a woman? Why can’t a series/movie have the leading role be a woman who saves the world? This is an outrage!
I want to bring up the following as an example… Do you remember the very popular series of the 90’s, Xena Warrior Princess? Lucy Lawless did a fantastic job of portraying this character and her sidekick Gabrielle, portrayed by Renee O’Connor. Xena and Gabrielle became “superheroes” in their own right all over the world for many people! People admired Xena’s strength (Physical and mental), her wit, her “Many skills”, her ability to love and her natural beauty! Gabrielle, a farm girl with no skills, except for the ability to tell wonderful stories, who persuaded the hard, cold Warrior Princess to take her on her journey to save the world. Over the years (seasons) Gabrielle grew in strength, skills as a fighter and warrior, but most of all she became Xena’s soulmate. Gabrielle had the ability to love unconditionally, see the good in everyone and people admired her character greatly for that! These two women were Warriors, best friends, soulmates and as some would say, lovers. The fan base for Xena grew bigger and stronger over the course of the seasons, and even after it ended people became fans. You won’t find more loyal, devoted and strong willed people than the Xenites (Xena fans)! After the show ended in 2001, fans all over the world begged the studios, producers and actors to make a movie or another season of Xena Warrior Princess. Their requests were ignored, even when petitions were signed and fans kept asking. Every year at the Xena conventions, fans would line up for the event all over the world, showing their devotion and love for this show! The fan base grew even bigger after Xena was added on Netflix, for anyone to watch. Even now new fans of this show are coming forth and expressing their love for the show. And what do they ALL want? For Xena and Gabrielle to return in a movie/series! Campaigns were started, petitions, fan mail, Twitter and Facebook accounts… And yet, nothing! Xena and Gabrielle are Heroines to so many people, they changed our lives!
Shows from the 80’s and 90’s are starting to come back, not with new cast members, but with the original cast. Examples; The X-files, Ash Vs Evil Dead and I am sure a few more. And still, NO Xena? Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor look AMAZING, and they can absolutely be the lead actresses in a Xena movie/series.
So why is it that even after all this we are still being ignored? Is it because they are two FEMALE “superheroes” and this is not what the audience wants? I surely hope NOT! Because from my perspective this is not the case!
Xenites all over the world have worked very hard for years now to get their Heroines back! And we all know it can be done. Action needs to be taken, and we will not stop fighting until we get our Xena Warrior Princess movie/series!
This is the New age, where gender equality is not supposed to be a problem! And yet, I see no movies with the lead being a female superhero? This is why I am asking all those who agree with me to stand together and help us fight this! Bring Xena Warrior Princess back with Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor and we’ll show the world how strong and powerful a show can be with two Females as the lead. Two Heroines returning to the world, empowering all of us with their strength, love and devotion!
Please return Xena Warrior Princess with Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor in a movie/series, and show the world that it CAN change!!
